Uncover the bold architectural principles behind Charles Holden’s Piccadilly line extension. How does design solve the tricky logistical problems posed by busy stations?

Overseen by Frank Pick, Holden’s western Piccadilly line extension stations are today widely regarded as fine examples of British Modernism. Learn about their shared style of ‘fitness for purpose’ as we venture through Sudbury Town, Alperton, Park Royal and Acton Town.

Please note

  • Age restrictions: Children under 14 years of age are not permitted onto the tours due to health and safety restrictions & the tour narrative being designed for an adult audience.
  • Clothing: Visitors must wear flat sturdy shoes. Guests wearing open toe sandals or shoes, or high-heels, will be refused entry due to health and safety restrictions.
  • Holden Goes West walking tours and Semi-Detached Holden tours are both approximately 2.5 hours long.
  • There are 12 places available on each tour.
  • The tour takes place across public locations. There are no cloakroom or toilet facilities available.
  • Please note the ticket price does not include the cost of travel. Please ensure you have sufficient funds available on your Oyster card, or that you have purchased a travelcard in advance of the tour.
  • We request that Holden Goes West guests meet outside the Sudbury Town ticket hall, 15 minutes before the time shown on their ticket. Semi-detached Holden guests are to meet outside the Oakwood Station ticket hall 15 minutes before the tour start time. Your guide will welcome you and issue guests with a wristband.
  • Station architecture tours are outside walking tours, so conditions on the tour will be affected by the weather, and access to some areas may be restricted due to adverse weather conditions.
  • The tour includes walking and stair climbing and might not be accessible for those with mobility issues.
  • You will be sent an event reminder email up to a week before your event with all the information that you will need to arrive on time and enjoy the tour.
  • Upon purchase, you will receive your ticket(s) via email to the email address you provided. It is your responsibility to check the accuracy of the details in advance of your booking as mistakes cannot always be rectified, especially at short notice. Please contact London Transport Museum if your contact details change after you purchase your ticket(s).
